Umbilical Cord

Umbilical cord

2023, public installation

Materials: wood, paint.

The work is a public installation at Roan Helsehus in Trøndelag Åfhord kommune.

The pattern is an old skinnfell pattern that symbolizes water.
Historically, the skinnfell was a profane object in the household in the Nordic countries. At the same time, the fell also ensured the family's survival in freezing winter and was there for one of the most important objects in the household. The "decoration" on the skin side was not only an esthetical element. In older times the patterns were put with careful consideration to ensure prosperity, fertility, good luck, good hunting, etc. Thus the patterns had a symbolic and ritual meaning, connecting people with the land, the elements, and the beings on the land.
The symbols and patterns originate from Heathern traditions, and through history some have changed adapting to the Christian mythology.
